Best RTX 2080 SUPER Cards for 1440p and 4K Gaming

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is the newest graphics card in the GeForce RTX 20 series from Nvidia. This is a card that is slightly more powerful than the RTX 2080 but costs the same for the performance boost it offers. This is a solid 1440p card and is also good for 4K gaming on ultra-graphics settings. However, for 4K gaming, you may have to compromise on some of the graphics settings by slightly lowering them down, depending on how resource hungry the game is. Right now, there is no direct competitor of RTX 2080 SUPER from AMD, and the only card that beats it is the mighty RTX 2080 Ti, which is way more expensive than the RTX 2080 SUPER. So, in terms of price-to-performance ratio, RTX 2080 SUPER is definitely a great card for high-end gaming.

RTX 2080 SUPER uses the same TU104 core that is used in the RTX 2080 and is built on the Turing GPU architecture on the 12nm manufacturing process. The card comes with 3072 CUDA Cores and 8GB GDDR6 memory having a 256-bit interface, running at 15.5 Gbps. The memory bandwidth offered here is 496 Gbps, which is pretty good. It also comes with RT cores and Tensor cores for Realtime Ray Tracing and DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) in supported games. The card comes with all the features that are present in the RTX 2080 that include DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.6, Vulkan, G-Sync, NVLink SLI, and Turing NVENC (Nvidia Encoder), USB Type-C connector with VirtualLink support, and is a true VR Ready card. Besides Founders Edition, there are many models of the card available from different manufacturers. These models differ from each other in clock speeds, cooler design, overclocking potential and pricing. So, if you are confused about which RTX 2080 SUPER card to get for your specific requirements, then here I am listing down the best RTX 2080 SUPER cards, each having their own USP (unique selling point) so that you can decide better.

Best Budget RTX 2080 SUPER [Dual Fan]

MSI GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER VENTUS

If you are looking for an affordable RTX 2080 SUPER card then MSI GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER VENTUS is clearly one of the best. This is also a good-looking card that has a silver-black color shroud and black painted fans. The card runs at stock speeds which is 1815 MHz for the reference RTX 2080 SUPER card, but because of better cooling, you can overclock this card safely using the MSI Afterburner overclocking software. The card is cooled down by dual VENTUS fans having a unique curve design, and an aluminum heatsink with 6mm thick copper heat pipes.

MSI-GeForce-RTX-2080-SUPER-VENTUS

Technically, this is a dual-slot card, but the shroud protrudes beyond the dual slots and does consume some space of the triple slot too. The card also has a metal backplate that gives it strength and rigidity. The power consumption of the card is rated at 250W and it requires one 8-pin and one 6-pin PCIe connector from the PSU. The power supply recommended for this card is 650W. Display connectivity options for this card include one HDMI port and three DisplayPort.

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER WINDFORCE OC 8G

[Silent, Semi-passive cooling]

If you are looking for a triple-fan RTX 2080 SUPER that is relatively cheaper in price than the other triple fan RTX 2080 SUPER cards, then Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER WINDFORCE OC 8G is a great choice. The card is slightly overclocked with a GPU frequency of 1830 MHz, which is 15 MHz more than the reference. The card employs WINDFORCE 3X Cooling System that consists of a heatsink with direct touch GPU copper heat pipes and three 82mm unique blade fans in an alternate spinning fashion to reduce turbulence and enhance airflow pressure. This is also a very silent RTX 2080 card because of semi-passive cooling 3D Active Fan technology, where the fans get turned off when GPU load is low or at idle, and when the GPU load increases during gaming, the fans automatically start again to keep the card cool.

Gigabyte-GeForce-RTX-2080-SUPER-WINDFORCE-OC-8G

You can also overclock this card further as it has a better power phase design to provide stable power delivery when overclocking. On the back of the card, there is a metal backplate to give the card protection and prevents it from sagging. This is a dual-slot card but the shroud overhangs slightly, which means fitting an expansion card in the third slot can be an issue. For power, it requires 8-pin and 6-pin connectors and a decent 650W PSU is needed to make it work without any issues. For display connectivity, it includes three DisplayPort and one HDMI port.

PNY is among the aftermarket manufacturer that released its custom-built RTX 2080 Super XLR8 titled GPU. It features PNY’s custom cooler, faster boost clock speeds than the Founders Edition while having a similar price as the Founders Edition.

It features a metallic front and backplate complimented by triple fans for peace of mind gaming at high resolutions like 4K. It is a 12-inch-long graphics card and one of the longest versions of the RTX 2080 Super that I have seen.

Except for the slick-looking design, there are not many reasons to go for this card, unless you prefer the aesthetics of this graphics card rather than the Founders Edition. For benchmarks, the XLR8 is barely able to produce matching results as the RTX 2080 Founders Edition.

Gaming performance is the same. The XLR8 produced decent results going toe-to-toe with the Founders Edition. You can overclock the XLR8 all you want with the help of Nvidia Scanner that can help the user overclock their GPU on a single click, but the results might be disappointing.

– Author Note:

PNY GeForce RTX 2080 Super XLR8 Gaming OC is by far one of the best-looking aftermarket graphics cards by PNY, that I have seen. An RGB lighting system would have been nice.

It comes with a faster boost clock speed than the 2080 Founders Edition and looks great and stuff on paper, however, it starts to fall in benchmarks as providing minimal gains over the Founders Edition in benchmarks and gaming.

So, on a finishing note, the PNY 2080 SUPER is the last graphic card I’m reviewing today from the list of some best RTX 2080 SUPER graphics cards.

Nvidia RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming Benchmarks!

To check how the GPU holds in the latest and demanding AAA titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 etc, let us jump into the testing. Using a weaker CPU will cause bottlenecks, and the results will no longer be reliable.

Fact: The RTX 2080 is an excellent card for 1080p and 1440p gaming that is best paired with a high refresh rate monitor like 144Hz.

To have the best possible results, top-of-the-line hardware is used. Below are the complete details of the system used for both 1080p and 1440p testing:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
  • Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming x570-PLUS
  • GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Super Gaming X TRIO
  • RAM: G.SKILL TridentZ 16 Gb @3600 MHz CL16

Due to the lack of implementation of DLSS and ray-tracing, it is hard to generate results using these technologies. Titles having support for DLSS and ray-tracing are tested without enabling these technologies .

Without wasting any precious time, let us get to the results of the test down below.

1080p And 1440p Testing:

Video Games Logo

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (1080p Very High)

First, we have Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. At very high settings preset, we are looking at a rough average of 100 fps, peaking at 145 fps . 55 FPS were recorded as 1 percent lowest. The game used around 3.3 GB of VRAM.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is not the ideally optimized game, as you might have guessed from the frame rate inconsistency.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (1440p Very High)

At 1440p, we are looking at an average of 80 fps, peaking at 112 fps , while 31 fps were recorded as 1 percent lowest. The VRAM consumption pumped from 3.3 Gb to 3.7 GB. The gameplay performance of the 2080 Super was quite inconsistent in this title.

Overall, an 80 fps average on demanding titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey at 1440p is acceptable.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (1080p High)

The next title we have is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at maximum graphical settings. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a moderately demanding title with decent optimization. We are looking at 140 fps on average , with GPU usage sitting at 97 percent.

The game used an average of 6.7 GB of VRAM at 1080p. Twice from what we have seen in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (1440p High)

The performance of the 2080 Super in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at 1440p high graphic preset remained satisfactory. We are looking at 97 fps frame rate as an average and 82 FPS as the lowest 1 percent.

Control (1080p High)

Control is a title that features ray-tracing and DLSS. For fair testing, DLSS and ray-tracing were disabled, with every other graphics setting maxed out. The 2080 Super managed to deliver an average of 89-90 fps and 75 fps as 1 percent lowest.

Control (1440p High)

Things become interesting at 1440p as we see around 32 percent performance loss. The 2080 Super managed to deliver barely over 60 fps, and 54 fps were recorded as 1 percent lowest. Control is a highly demanding title, and getting 60 fps at 1440p is not the best but still decent.

However, with the help of DLSS, you can pump the frame rate, depending on which DLSS quality preset you may choose.

DOOM Eternal (1080p Ultra)

Doom Eternal was by far the best optimized game on the list and was the only game where we have seen an average frame rate of 225 fps . 171 fps were recorded as 1 percent lowest.

DOOM Eternal (1440p Ultra)

Performance remained similar at 1440p , as the average is around 155 mark, and 112 was the lowest frame rate. Overall impressive result by the 2080 Super. The credit also goes to id software that did an exceptional job with optimization.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (1080p High)

Red Dead Redemption 2 is by far the most demanding title in the tests. With all graphical settings maxed out, 77 fps is the average that was recorded. A 61 fps drop was the lowest 1 percent. The game put 98 percent of the GPU to work with over 3.7 GB of VRAM usage, surprisingly low, for a title like Red Dead Redemption.

The area that was used for this testing was one of the most crowded areas in the game, you can expect a higher frame rate in open areas.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (1440p High)

At 1440p, the card managed a stable frame rate of 60 fps with maxed-out settings . 49 fps frame rate was recorded as 1 percent lowest. Note: The game support DLSS but no ray-tracing, but like Control, the tests were performed without using DLSS.

You can expect a high frame rate in open areas and without using DLSS, but you might lose image quality depending on which DLSS preset you are going to use.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (1080p High)

Lastly, we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is a decently optimized title. At maxed-out graphics settings, we are looking at an average of 115 fps in open areas, while in closed areas, the average jumps up to 150 fps.

A 122 fps drop was observed as 1 percent lowest. The game consumed over 4.6 GB of VRAM, and surprisingly around 70 percent of GPU was used throughout the whole 1080p testing.

Moving on to 1440p, an average of 97 fps was delivered by the 2080 Super. The average frame rate dropped up to 70 fps as 1 percent lowest. This time the GPU usage was around 98 percent most of the time. The VRAM usage jumped from 4.6 to 4.9 GB, which is interesting.

Recommended Power Supplies (PSUs) For The Best RTX 2080 Super

The RTX 2080 Super replaces the RTX 2080 and is a direct successor of the GTX 1080. The RTX 20 series is based on Turing architecture and while having multiple hardware improvements over the preceding Pascal series. The power consumption is increased up to 39 percent between the 2080 super and GTX 1080.

Fact: The RTX 2080 is a power-efficient card, which is rated for 225 watts of power consumption for the Founders Edition, while the base version is rated for 215 watts of power consumption.

The base 2080 is rated for 215 watts , a mere 35-watt increase. The Founders Edition featured 225 watts of power consumption. Which then increase up to 250 watts after the release of 2080 Super, an 11 percent increase over the base 2080.

If you are looking for a 2080 Super graphics card, and it is an upgrade from a slower graphics card, then you might as well look for a new power supply, Nvidia recommends 650 watts will suffice, so I will stick with those numbers.

If you already have a decent power supply, then you only have to get the graphics card but make sure your PSU has 6-pin + 8-pin power connectors. If not, then you may also have to get a new power supply.

The total power draw of the system was around 420 watts , with the GPU consuming around 230 watts at 1440p. So, a 650-watt PSU will more than cover your GPU and PC needs.

Choosing The Best RTX 2080 Super Graphics Card

Overclocking And Thermals

The cooler design used on the RTX 2080 Super is the same as the RTX 2080. However, in the case of 2080, there is an increase of 25 watts of power that can cause a temperature increase in the 2080 Super quicker than in 2080.

Compared to the 2080 and 2070 Super, the fans on the RTX 2080 Super spun faste r, which indicated higher operating temperatures. Nothing surprising as 2080 Super features the highest number of active resources compared to other GPUs.

The temperature graphs painted a similar picture . The RTX 2080 Super ran the hottest, peaking as far as 78 degrees Celsius during stress testing. On the contrary, other Turning GPUs fluttered around the 70 degrees mark.

Eventually, the 2080 Super ran into a power limit, which prevented the boost clock from peaking over 1700 MHz, higher than the base frequency, but is rather underwhelming.

Fact: 4K gaming 60 fps possible with the RTX 2080, however, a few graphics settings tweaking may require in demanding games.

Due to the power limit, overclocking is not much viable as we are looking at around 10 percent of performance boost before the GPU starts to thermal throttle or crash.

Compatibility, Ports & Overall Value

PC building is a cumbersome process due to the overwhelming number of factors that need to be addressed before a user can assemble their system and start playing video games. Not everything is compatible with the RTX 2080 Super , and by compatibility, I mean compatibility with motherboards and CPUs.

It is not possible to plug this GPU in any PC and expect the system to boot. Due to PCIe slots being backward compatible as long as you have at least PCIe 3.0 compatible motherboard, the graphics card will work on almost every motherboard.

Connectivity Options on RTX 2080 Super

Secondly, ports are crucial, and what good a monitor is if it does not have the support for new ports like HDMI and DisplayPort. The RTX 2080 Super has 3x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI port, and 1x USB Type-C ports on the rear.

If you have an older display that does not have the compatible ports that the RTX 2080 Super has, you will not be able to plug it into your monitor. Lastly, the value of the 2080 Super depends on your older GPU.

If you are coming from GTX 900 series or even lower, the RTX 2080 will be a high-value card. It is excellent for 1080p and 1440p gaming . The card is overpriced these days, yes, but at MSRP, it offers an outstanding cost per frame and performance per watt values which makes the GPU a high-value upgrade from 1080 and lower GPUs.

Overall, the RTX 2080 is a solid premium graphics card which is not something to get excited about, but it does its job delivering decent performance at 1080p and 1440p best for monitors with high refresh rates.

Length And Width

The physical dimensions of graphics are length and width. These dimensions figure out whether or not the 2080 Super versions of the graphics card fit inside the PC. The length is calculated in millimeters.

As the 2080 sequence is high-end, these GPUs typically come with a long length, particularly if you are choosing a budget-friendly graphics card. Make sure to cross-check the length of the GPU and case specification to ensure it perfectly fits inside the case , or else your precious money will be wasted.

On the other hand, width is measured in PCI Express slots and is typically a less important metric than the rest of the factors.

Unless you are using an extra expansion card or building an ITX that doesn’t come with enough space underneath the motherboard, a 3-slot graphics card will work fine for most systems. Be Careful!

My Final Verdict:

Back when the RTX 20 series was launched, Nvidia made big promises like a smooth 4K gaming at 60 fps, especially with the RTX 2080. The card did manage to touch the 60 frame rate in highly optimized and less demanding games and struggled to deliver over 40 fps in demanding titles.

But, if DLSS is taken into consideration, 4K gaming at 60 fps does not feel like a far fetch reality and even in the most demanding titles, getting this type of performance is possible, implying the game has support for DLSS in the first place.

Unless you are crazy about ray-tracing and DLSS, there are fewer reasons to recommend the 2080 super. Value-wise, it is not the best, and you can explore other options like the 5700XT or the newly released RTX 30 series.

But if you have issues finding a GPU and you have no other options, it is better if you stick with 1440p or lower resolutions.

In short, 4K gaming at 60 fps is no longer a dream and is here with the RTX 20 series graphics card, but you will have to spend a fortune to obtain it.
